Let's take a look at the long term value of school chaplaincy through the experience of an average Aussie young person, let's call him Harrison.*

Harrison was living in a single parent home and struggled throughout primary school, having experienced bullying. He was regularly supported by the school wellbeing team and in particular, the Principal and chaplain Annie*.

When Harrison finished Grade 6, he said he wasn't sure if he would be able to complete high school. The principal and chaplain both said they believed in him and gave him encouragement to keep trying and not to give up.

Years later, both the Principal and school chaplain Annie continue to work at the same school, supporting the community, other students and families. This could have been the end of the story, but fast forward six years...

One day, some visitors at school to see the Principal and chaplain. It was Harrison and his Mum! Harrison had come back to say that he had in fact completed secondary school. His Mum was delighted and thankful for all the support he had received in primary school.

They were thrilled with all that Harrison had gone on to do and expressed how grateful they were for the kindnesses shown by the Principal and Chaplain.

Chaplains like Annie, (along with other staff) can make a massive difference to students and their families, especially when they are able to support them over the long haul, encouraging them and giving them strategies to succeed in life.
