A school chaplain provided support to a Melbourne school student over the last few years: She is now in Year 6, and let's call her *Lily. Last year, the chaplain noticed Lily become more anxious and withdrawn than usual.
The chaplain spoke to Lily to find out what was happening and as Lily explained some changes in her home life, the chaplain was able to provide additional support. One way was speaking to Lily's parent, another was to encourage Lily to engage in a positive activity or hobby.
From here, the Lego Club at school was started! Lily decided to try Lego and enjoyed it but.. when other Year 6s joined in, two tables filled up and they wanted to meet once a month! So the chaplain put Lily in charge and she stepped up and was very organised, and took great joy in leading the Club.
At the end of last term Lily was presented with a citizenship award. Her mother is so appreciative of the transformation in confidence and self-esteem that she sees in her daughter.
Lego Club has become a safe space for other students to feel welcomed and accepted. It provides a creative outlet, away from 'screen time' and allows them to learn team work and to express themselves. Lego Club is a special place and time for Lily and others at school. It is just one of many social skill initiatives facilitated by chaplains and enjoyed by all involved.
With your support, we can assist and empower more young people like Lily to build confidence and community one brick at a time!
